What to Do After Sending Crypto on the Wrong Network

What Does Sending on the Wrong Network Mean?​

A wrong-network transfer happens when the sender uses a blockchain different from the one the recipient expected. For example, an exchange may provide a USDT deposit for one network while the sender withdraws USDT on another.

The token name or symbol does not identify its network. USDT, USDC, ETH, and other assets can exist on several blockchains.

Do not send another transaction until you understand where the first one went. Blockchain transactions cannot normally be canceled or reversed after confirmation.

Reproduce and Verify the Issue​

Use the existing transaction. Do not make another transfer to reproduce the problem.

  1. Open the asset used for the transfer in Gem Wallet.
  2. Select the transaction from the activity list.
  3. Check its Status and Network.
  4. Select View on explorer name at the bottom of the transaction details.
  5. On the explorer, record the complete recipient address, network, asset or token contract, amount, and transaction ID.
  6. Compare those details with the receiving wallet or exchange deposit instructions.

If the transaction is not visible in Gem Wallet, get its transaction ID from the sender or exchange withdrawal history. Follow How to Find a Crypto Transaction ID.

Why Did Gem Wallet Accept the Address?​

Gem Wallet validates whether an address is valid for the selected blockchain. Some networks use clearly different address formats, so an address from another chain can be rejected as invalid.

Other networks share a compatible address format. Ethereum and several EVM-compatible networks, for example, can use addresses beginning with 0x. A valid address format does not prove that the recipient supports the selected network.

Always verify the network separately from the address before confirming a transaction.

Was the Transaction Successful?​

The Transaction Is Pending​

Wait until its status changes before attempting recovery. Use Why Is My Crypto Transaction Pending? for the correct checks.

The Transaction Failed or Reverted​

The intended transfer did not complete. The blockchain may still charge a network fee for processing the attempt, but the transferred asset should not have reached the recipient.

Review the failure details and balances before creating a new transaction on the correct network.

The Transaction Is Successful​

The blockchain delivered the asset to the address shown on the explorer. What happens next depends on who controls that address.

Sent to Your Own Gem Wallet Address​

The funds may be accessible if all of the following are true:

  • Gem Wallet supports the network used by the transaction.
  • The destination address belongs to the same Gem Wallet.
  • Gem Wallet supports the asset, or the token can be added using its verified contract address.

Check the receiving wallet:

  1. Open the asset list and select Manage Token List.
  2. Search for the network's native asset and enable it.
  3. Search for the received token on that network and enable it.
  4. If the token is not listed, follow How to Add a Custom Token using the verified contract address.
  5. Compare the wallet's complete receive address on that network with the explorer recipient.

Seeing the same address on two compatible networks does not move assets between them. The funds remain on the network used by the transaction. Moving them later requires that network's native coin for fees.

Do not import your recovery phrase into an unfamiliar wallet, website, or recovery service. Anyone with the phrase can control every asset in the wallet.

Sent to an Exchange or Custodial Platform​

If the exchange does not support the network used, only the receiving platform can determine whether it can recover or credit the deposit.

Contact the platform that controls the destination address and provide:

  • The transaction ID.
  • The asset and token contract, if applicable.
  • The network used.
  • The complete deposit address.
  • The amount and approximate time.
  • Any memo or destination tag included.

Do not send another deposit until the exchange confirms the correct network. Gem Wallet cannot access an exchange's receiving address or reverse the confirmed transaction.

Sent to Another Self-Custody Wallet​

The owner of the destination wallet must check whether that wallet supports the network and asset. If the address belongs to them but their app does not display the network, they should contact their wallet provider for safe, product-specific instructions.

Gem Wallet cannot recover funds from another person's wallet or provide its recovery phrase.

Prevent Wrong-Network Transfers​

  • Match the complete network name on both sending and receiving screens.
  • Do not rely only on the token symbol or address format.
  • Verify that the receiving exchange supports deposits on the selected network.
  • Check whether a memo or destination tag is required.
  • Send a small test amount before a large first-time transfer.
  • Confirm receipt before sending the remaining balance.

If the explorer shows the correct network and recipient but the balance is missing, follow Crypto Transaction Confirmed but Not Received.
